Cast Iron Radiator Restoration

The Old Radiator Company specialises in the restoration of original cast iron radiators.

Tempted to dump your old radiators and replace them with modern steel radiators?  Please think again.  Layers of old gunky chipped paint can make a radiator look ugly and ready for the scrap heap.  The Old Radiator Company prides itself on restoring old cast iron radiators back to their former glory.  In some cases, our restored radiators look better than they did in their heyday.  Please click any of the following thumbnails to follow our restoration process.

Cast iron radiator restoration is most definitely not a do-it-yourself job.  It can be a difficult and dirty job demanding physical hard work, and that's just the start.  When we begin a restoration, we perform initial pressure testing to find joint leaks and cracks.  Leaking joints are rectified by breaking open the radiator and replacing joint gaskets, then re-joining the radiators sections.  In some cases replacement sections are fitted.  The radiator is once again pressure tested to check the joint repair work.  Reducing bushes are fitted to enable metric valves to be fitted.  The radiator is then ready for flush testing to clean out the inside of gunk and filings, before it is sand blasted and the finish is applied.  After sand blasting the radiator is tested again for leaks and cracks that may have been caused during the sandblasting process.  Radiators that fail testing and that are too badly damaged or deteriorated for restored are sent to radiator heaven where they live happily ever after.

If you want to scour the salvage yards looking for your own radiator that you would like to have restored, then we urge you to be cautious.  Such radiators may have cracks that you are unable to see.  Where a radiator has visible rust at a joint, then clearly the radiator has leaked, but cast iron radiators can also develop cracks in joints during handling when they are removed from buildings and unloaded at salvage yards.  Internal gaskets that seal the joints between sections are particularly susceptible to damage.  There is generally a failure rate of 10% in un-restored old radiators, so if you are buying old cast iron radiators, make sure they have been properly reconditioned.

Once you have acquired a cast iron radiator, or maybe you already have an old cast iron radiator in your house, we are able to carry out a professional restoration for you.  If you need a number of radiators which match you would be better off using a specialist company such as ourselves that carry a large stock of cast iron radiators, rather than trying to find radiators at salvage yards.  We can help you here.  Having expert restoration of your radiators will save you time and money on expensive repairs in the long run.

We can collect your old cast iron radiators and deliver your refurbished radiators to any part of the UK.  Click here for the PRICE LIST.
